🇳🇿Walked down the hotel yesterday to get some dinner and pass by The Cantina . Menu outside on a stand . Flipped thru the menu and talks about the famous Penang Chow Kueh Tyau. Went in and no one came to greet. Three table with customers. Area is clean . Then a waitress came out with menu. Ordered a tiger beer but chef that cooks the dish is away !!!. Only few items available. Ordered wanton . Pretty average the food paid $18 and beer $15.50. There is a much better hawker style shop Kian Kiat Kopitam just around the corner. Much better food and beer is $2 cheaper. If you just want to have a beer late it's ok. Food no.

The food is ok only. The main chef was not in after 2.30pm. the assistant did the preparation.
The tofu in curry laksa is a little tough. The green tea is a little diluted.

We thought that we would enjoy a couple of beers while having a light dinner while driving around Taipan and came across the Cantina.
We ordered a couple of cold ones, a char kue tiow and a won ton noodles.
The mrs. said the former was ok, although it needed a tad more pepper.
I had won ton with chicken and a hot bowl of soup. The won ton needed more salt, i thought, and maybe, more noodles as I finished it in 2 gulps. But it was garnished with lots of vegetables and quite a bit of chicken.

So, a friend calls me up and says to meet me at Cantina. I didn't expect much of it, at first. However, I was wrong. There's a lot more in there than meets the eye.

There's a singer that comes on at around 7:30pm or so to entertain.

Now, I will skip about the beers and drinks because that's what you'd expect from a watering hole.

It's the food. SK, the owner/chef, dishes out a mean char kuey teow, complete with lap cheong (Chinese sausage), fish cakes, lots of bak eu phoke, and most importantly, cockles!

As a Penangite who knows what good char kuey teow should be, I'd say SK gets it right in all the departments, except one - the wok is not quite hot enough, and therefore the char kuey teow is missing the smokiness.

Having said that, I must admit I gobbled down not one, but two plates of the char kuey teow there, with special instructions not to fry the kuey teow with the cockles but to keep it raw on top of the dish!

He also serves a mean curry mee. And that's what I'll be going back for, next.

Been a long time since I ate asam laksa. From the empty bowl, you know I devoured everything! Very generous with the fish. For the curry laksa, the cockles are big and fresh.

Nice bistro/pub with friendly owner and staffs. Heineken / Guiness stout package @ RM 130 for 10 mugs. They serve bar food and simple local food like char kuey teow, fried noodle, fried rice etc. We ordered deep fried ikan bulus and quil. Both were delicious and tasty!

Cantina @ USJ is a pleasant neighborhood pub where everyone is a friend. Co-owned by Ms Christine Teo and business partners; Mr. Damien and Mr. SK Lim who also doubles as the pub's chef.

The food are really good here. Serving mostly light and finger foods with emphasis on Penang specialities, eg; curry and prawn mee, chicken wings, char-k-teow, fried rice, ikan bilis, sausages, grilled fish, chicken chop, etc.

Great place to unwind over cold draft beers. An "in-house" guitar is ever present for anyone in the mood to showcase their hidden talents...over a few pints.

The Good Food Pub. This is the new name which I suggested to the owner SK, a jovial and friendly gentleman.

This has got to be the best restaurant pub that I have been to.

It is well known for its local Penang dishes and Japanese cuisines. The curry laksa and Fried Kway Teow will not disappoint you.

The owner SK opened the joint because of his love for cooking. His sister and his two sons are great cooks too.

The joint has been operating for over 11 years and yet it is not overflowing with customers. I like this.

You can come for a few beers and the place is quiet and clean.

It won’t be too long before people gets to find out about this place.
