I stayed here for two nights in March 2025. It has taken a while to come up with this review, but fortunately, much of my time there remains vivid in my mind. In fact, I believe some of these memories are indelible.
I won't forget, for example, the many hours I spent at the veranda first thing in the morning, during the scorching mid-day and at night, just taking in the views, watching people going about with their daily lives, and spotting birds. I also will always appreciate the backstory of the homestay, that it was built over two decades ago by the paramount chief (pemanca) of the Kelabits to host visitors to Bario. The late Ngimat Ayu (yes, the homestay bears his name) was influential in the community and to me, the homestay certainly has historical and communal resonance. His widow continues to live here and I had brief but meaningful chats with her. The warmth and easygoing nature of caretakers Deborah and her husband, Steve, has also left a lasting impression.
I was the only guest during my time here, but I enjoyed the quiet and I always felt comfortable. I was given a room with an ensuite. Although they were rather basic, I didn't suffer any significant inconvenience. I like that the building overlooks rice fields and there's plenty of great scenery to admire from the veranda. It's at least a 20-minute walk to Bario town, but I was more than glad to stroll around and take my time observing life in Bario.
I'm happy to have stayed at the Ngimat Ayu House Bario, and will likely book again when (not if, hopefully) I return to Bario.

We had a wonderful time at bario - a place to unwind busy life. Ngimat ayu homestay is a like a grandma house.. suitable for family at all ages. We are well taken care during our stay. Room comes with private washroom and the balcony has an great view of padi field. Food is the best!! From wild asparagus to kijang meat.||||Nigel is an excellent guide and everything is well arranged. He took excellent care to both my boys during the climb to prayer mountain.

Siamo stati come a casa, semplicemente bellissimo.

We stayed here for 2 nights having booked a package via a travel agency in Miri. We were greeted at the airport by Scott and our guide Lian and then taken to Ngimat Ayu house. We were earlier than the rest of our group, so we chilled on the lovely verandah enjoying the cool breezes until lunchtime. The food was all prepared fresh by Linda and her Mum and there was a good and plentiful selection of local food at each meal. Scott and Linda were very friendly and helpful, and the photos and information about their Dad who was a very influential figure in Bario for decades was fascinating.||||On the first afternoon we took a walk with Lian around the area and found out about rice growing (unfortunately this is not the season), and then we went to the local longhouse where we were greeted by a dozen ladies all dancing a welcome song. We saw more dances and then took part ourselves before having some tea and food.||||The next day we went up prayer mountain, but the weather was against us and in strong winds and rain we decided to turn round at the old church. This is a very strenuous climb for anyone who is not fit. In the afternoon we drove and then walked to the salt well, and tasted the water, but there was no processing going on.||||We stayed in room 1 with a comfortable and large double bed and a small en suite bathroom. This is basic, rustic living, not 5 star luxury, but we found it to be very comfortable.||||We managed to buy beer locally, but brought wine in with us - you really do need to bring in most things that you might want as there is little in the shops. Not surprising for a place where most things still come in by air as the road is a 14 hour drive only suitable for 4WD pickups!||||Thanks to Scott, Linda and Lian for looking after us so well.

Arrived Bario and was greeted by a Rela (Johnny Kampung, that's what l was told) funny guy and a local comedian! ||Pick up by Scott Apui who runs Ngimat Ayu Homestay! Drove us to his place! Location was beautiful from the veranda!||Walk around and down to the long house Bario Asal! Was met by Uncle Panai, who brought us around and explained how the long house came about! Each room has a history and had photos of the famous and well know Kelabits past and present.||The pineapple was to die for served by Uncle Panai and his lovely wife! Natural sweetness.||Nice walk along the paddy fields famous for the Bario rice.||Dinner at Ngimat Ayu Homestay was to die for and the proof is in the pudding! Our lovely chef Linda prepared the most delicious local crusine, delicacy wild boar smoked to perfection by Mr. Scott Apui himself! ||Visited a local artist Stephen and admired his local paintings!||Unable to visit the salt spring and the famous Prayer mountain due to rain.||Will definitely plan a longer trip this time to complete the climb up Prayer Mountain.||Thanks to Ngimat Ayu for the fantastic marvellous hospitality. One of a kind!

Basic room with attached bathroom, but hot shower at common bathroom. Tepuk has a lot of homegrown veg and cook nice and tasty meals. We especially love their homemade pineapple jam! Morning climb to Prayer Mountain was superb with stunning view over Bario. Thank you Nigel for arrangement of farming, salt spring, prayer mountain and nonetheless, diy fishing rod at the pond right in front of Ngimat Ayu House!

Stayed here for only 3 days, which is not really enough, especially if you are an outdoor person that enjoys trekking and nature. There is limited internet connectivity and the only place for a free wifi is at Bario town telecentre, which is about 2 km from the home stay.||The hosts (Scott, Linda and Evelyn) were very hospitable and helpful, making me felt very much relaxed in the homely environment. I was given a corner room on the first floor with attached shower/toilet, which was very convenient. The room is spacious and airy too. ||There are few bicycles available for rent @ Rgt 30 daily. The bicycles can get you around Bario easily, but are not really suitable for avid cyclists to do trail mountain biking. Overall, it was a lovely and memorable experience at Ngimat Ayu and yes, I would love to come back and stay here again in the future.

The homestay is located in the heart of Bario town, just opposite of Bario market. You can easily walk to the shoplots and shop for some local produce early morning every day. Ribita Layong is a good cook. Her local dishes made of wild vegetables and fresh caught fish/meat were absolutely delish. The rooms were tidy, and do be shocked if you can't find any fan/air-conditioning. The weather is so nice that you don't even need them! If you're at the balcony on the first floor, you can search for free wifi signal at a "specific corner".
