Live band is what attracted us to The Old Merchant. Advance booking is required if you want a table in front of the live band. We once walked in and could not secure a table outside the bar, along the Melaka river. The ambient and scenery are great, though.

The duo performers are quite good and sang all the songs the customer dedicated.
There is fast food and all kinds of alcohol to satisfy your needs.

Toilet is clean, and they burnt a kind of aroma to purify the air.

Went early around 7pm. The seating outside is very comfortable and quiet.
Livenband starts at 9:30 but doesn’t affect the noise level if you are seated outside.
Portuguese cocktail is very good, we ordered 3 jugs.

One of the great pleasures on this Earth is a well made cocktail. My standard for judging most places is how well they can make an old fashioned, and if they happen to make their own version of an old fashioned.

So when we were in Malacca, we went to @the_old_merchant for some late night drinks and speakeasy vibes. This place is on point, I loved the live music and the bar inside, but the real treat was sitting out back by the water watching the boats and the night sky. All the drinks were amazing, but double kudos for the Made for Baba drink - their version of an old fashioned. It hit all the notes for me, tasty bourbon, cinnamon, the right amount of smoke with just a touch of bitter / sweet. Served in the right glass with a big old hunk of ice. Yay for a great drink, the perfect way to cap off a night in the Old City. Highly recommend!

Great bar in Malacca with well designed decor and ambiance. Drinks are good, well curated and well made. They have a good selection of indoor seating as well as outdoor seats by the river. Only thing to improve is the live band they had that day. They were singing all kinds of songs across many genres and languages which not all guests would enjoy. Should just stick to a good playlist instead.

Beautiful, low lit bar with plenty of drink choices and wheat beer on tap.

We sat in their outdoor seating which is on the river as they had live music inside on which was a little loud for us to talk.

They seem to ask people to pay as they drink even if table service which is slightly odd, but this could be because we were sitting outside.

The vibe is relaxing, but the AC is too strong, way beyond comfortable. I mean it. Try saving some energy.

As for the drinks, I ordered Love in Melaka. It was sweet and mild, but I didn’t get the Melaka part, maybe just the Love.
We also had Belize, the Watermelon, Spicy Devil, Cendul, and the smoky one.
Belize was Belize, which I liked.
The watermelon one tasted like watermelon candy.
Spicy Devil was so spicy we couldn’t finish it. Cendul was mild and totally cendul, loved it.
The smoky one came with a cap and smoke. very cool and tasted strong.

Initially, I had trouble locating the entrance as Google Maps took me to the next shoplot but just as I was starting to suspect this was the entrance, someone came out for a smoke and voila I found the door 😅. I came early as soon as they opened at 5 pm, and there were already a few patrons inside. The interior decorations are nice, and their cocktail are equally as good. I watched as the mixologist carefully prepared by drink, and it came out beautifully. A must go for anyone who is in Melaka.
Update-I popped by again recently and was pleased that they have expanded. They have a space upstairs as well with a nice view overlooking the river. They drinks menu are different now with many new cocktails. I tried as many as I could and returned the following day for more. I also tried their bar food, and it was good. One of the best spots is sitting outside next to the river walkway and watching the boats go by.
